On Monday November 07, 2022, some 110 Heads of State and Government from 26 countries and the European Union gathered to take part in COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt, with the firm commitment to launch the partnership of Forest and Climate Leaders Partnership. The partnership aims at scaling up actions to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030, while ensuring development and promoting inclusive rural transformation. These fundamental actions have the potential to deliver up to 30% of the emission reductions needed to meet the Paris Agreement targets.
The stakes of COP27 revolved around rich countries' commitments at the heart of the debate; financing of loss and damage; the amount allocated to adaptation; reducing greenhouse gas emissions; the carbon market, biodiversity, fossil fuels, etc.
The Council of Ministers of Central Africa of COMIFAC, which includes 11 member countries, played its active role through the voice of the President in office, the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife H.E Jules Doret NDONGO. The latter in his speech, did not fail to reaffirm the commitment of the members of COMIFAC whose forests play a central role in the regulation of the global climate, to provide necessary and verifiable efforts for the preservation of their forests. Tropical climates, as well as to conserve biodiversity and thus contribute to the collective effort to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
