On September 12, 2024, the Hilton Hotel in Yaoundé was the venue for the presentation of honors to laureate Cécile Bibiane DJEBET. The event was co-chaired by the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, Jules DORET NDONGO, and the Minister of the Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development, Mr. HELE Pierre.
Madame Cécile Bibiane Djebet, nicknamed the "champion for the sake of forests", has distinguished herself in the defense of environmental interests. As a result, she has been awarded the "UN Earth Champion" prize for her commitment in tackling environmental challenges; the "Wangari Maathai" prize, champion of the sake of forests, for her exceptional contribution in forest conservation and improving the lives of the people who depend on them; and the Gulbenkian for Humanity prize, which rewards players who have developed initiatives aimed at strengthening climate resilience.
Cécile Bibiane DJEBET, Cameroonian agronomist and gender expert, campaigns for African women's right to secure land tenure through her association, African Women's Network for the community management of forests, (Réseau des femmes africaines pour la gestion communautaire des forêts (REFACOF). She has undertaken the restoration of forest cover for a project covering 20 million hectares.
In their successive speeches, the two Ministers congratulated the prizewinner and praised the quality and positive contribution of her actions in favor of forest restoration, inviting participants to follow her example and become champions in forest preservation.
