The “Ad hoc” Inter-ministerial Committee tasked with monitoring the implementation of Cameroon’s National Ivory Action Plan (NIAP), under the chairmanship of Mr MANGA BELL EPIE, Technical Advisor No.2 and Representative of the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, held discussions during its closing workshop on the project, “Supporting the implementation of Cameroon’s CITES National Ivory Action Plan and reducing the supply of ivory from Cameroon’s TRIDOM Region, through effective stockpile management” on 27 and 28 June 2024, at BANO PALACE Hotel in AKWA, DOUALA.

Opening discussions, Mr MOMBALLA MBUN Constant, Representative of TRAFFIC Central Africa Programme Office Director, focused on the status of elephant conservation in Africa; ivory seizure, data analyses and capacity building for forest law enforcement officers.

Mr EPIE, for his part, addressed the ecological, economic, cultural and aesthetic importance of biodiversity for the numerous populations of Cameroon, as well as wildlife crime, notably elephants. This was followed by a series of presentations, including among others, wildlife crime; poaching and illegal wildlife trade (causes, trends and consequences); legal frameworks and other international, regional, and national wildlife regulatory frameworks; and introduction to CITES (the regulator of international trade in wildlife species). The floor was then given for a question and answer session. A series of questions were raised, leading to breakout sessions on two issues: brainstorming on possible NIAP prospects and next steps, and making proposals on a set of activities to be conducted based on lessons drawn from implementing the previous project and the major pillars of NIAP.

Furthermore, participants made a multitude of resolutions and recommendations, and to everyone’s satisfaction, the Minister’s Representative declared the workshop closed.
