The Minister of Forestry and Wildlife presided over the ceremony to hand over 150 motorbikes to some officials of the central and decentralised services of his ministerial department on March 18, 2024, at the esplanade of the ministerial building No. 2. The motorcycles, acquired following a national call for tenders opened in July 2023, will be added to the rolling stock already in the ministry's fleet.
The Minister was keen to point out that the ceremony reflected the interest he takes in improving the working conditions of forestry staff, particularly the eco-guards, who carry out a dangerous job, sometimes risking their lives. Poaching and the illegal wildlife trade are urgent problems that threaten biodiversity and the survival of many animal and plant species.
It should also be noted that the fight against these scourges is increasingly being waged in difficult conditions that require a high degree of mobility. And it is generally up to the eco-guards to deal with poachers and traffickers of all kinds who scour protected areas, national parks and reserves and up to them to defend our national heritage. They will be able to react quickly to alerts and denunciations and have access to areas that are sometimes remote. With the acquisition of these 150 motorbikes, we want to bring back the history of the past, the images of certain eco-guards travelling very long distances on a daily basis to go from one end to another. We are allocating 42 motorbikes to the Adamaoua region, 65 to the Far North and 39 to the North," said Minister Jules Doret Ndongo.
