Cameroon’s Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, Jules Doret Ndongo and the Nigerian Federal Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal have signed an agreement on behalf of their respective countries on transboundary ecosystems conservation and sustainable management of forestry and wildlife resources by designing and implementing programs of common interest. The signing ceremony which took place in Abuja, Nigeria paves the way for a new page in cooperation ties between both countries in the domain of biodiversity.
On the Cameroonian side, the Faro, Tchabal Mbabo (still under creation), Takamanda, Korup, and Waza National Parks were considered in the agreement as well as any other strategic transboundary conservation areas that may be identified in future.
The agreement thus call for a more collaborative measures to jointly combat poaching and deforestation, develop a common management strategy via a landscape approach that takes into account aspects of connectivity among the concerned protected areas.
It will also structure and promote transboundary trade in timber, timber by-products as well as non-timber forest products; collaborate in areas of research, processing and enhancement of forest products.
Both parties will thus source for funds and develop sustainable funding mechanisms, jointly develop and subsequently implement common transboundary programs. The agreement was signed for a period of 3 years renewable.
